<p class="MsoNormal">The state of Minnesota is currently working on creating a series of classifications specific to work performed by state agency
<b>General Counsel</b> positions. These positions differ from our Attorney class series positions which provide professional legal services and legal protection against lawsuits opposed to the interests of the state; provide prosecutorial assistance to enforce
regulations or laws; and represent the state in legal matters that result from day to day operation of the business of the state. Attorney class positions require delegation from the Office of the Attorney General.

<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">By contrast, positions performing <b>General Counsel</b> work do not require delegation from the Office of the Attorney General. The purpose of these positions is providing<span style="letter-spacing:-.2pt">
</span>legal<span style="letter-spacing:-.3pt"> </span>advice<span style="letter-spacing:-.45pt">
</span>and<span style="letter-spacing:-.55pt"> </span>counsel,<span style="letter-spacing:-.5pt">
</span>legal<span style="letter-spacing:-.85pt"> </span>direction,<span style="letter-spacing:-.2pt">
</span>and<span style="letter-spacing:-1.0pt"> </span>supervision<span style="letter-spacing:-.2pt">
</span>to<span style="letter-spacing:-.55pt"> </span>all<span style="letter-spacing:-.6pt">
</span>of<span style="letter-spacing:-.75pt"> </span>the<span style="letter-spacing:-.55pt">
</span>Department's<span style="letter-spacing:-.15pt"> </span>legal<span style="letter-spacing:-.55pt">
</span>activities. These functions include the oversight, direction, and coordination of the Department's contracts, litigation, legal advice, data privacy functions, administrative law functions, rulemaking, legal policies, negotiations and settlements, and
legal compliance<span style="letter-spacing:.5pt"> </span>activities. Depending on the size and complexity of the agency, General Counsel positions currently span from the individual contributor level to Manager level.<o:p></o:p></p>
