Tecla, Alex and I have had a few conversations with Micelle Bartlett at the University of Idaho about scholarships and endowments in general. Currently the Hagan fund is used for the moot court competition and we understand money donated to that fund can only be used for that purpose. This section has tremendous respect for the dedication and service Judge Pappas has given to the Federal Bankruptcy Court, and our section. His commitment to the law has made an indelible print upon the Idaho Bankruptcy bar.
The intent of the scholarship is to honor Judge Pappas' contribution and impress upon future members of the Bar, the importance civility, fairness and equity. Characteristics our section holds in high esteem and qualities which Judge Pappas has exhibited during his time with the Court. Based on our discussions at the seminar we have a few broad options:
1. Raise money and donate it on Judge Pappas behalf to the Hagan fund
2. Create a new Bankruptcy Judges endowment at U of I and create a specific purpose that we decide as a a section.
3. Create a fund outside of U of I that can be used for a purpose chosen by this section.
I spoke with Judge Pappas and his passion is the moot court team, and he would prefer anything on his behalf to go to U of I. He seemed very keen on the Bankruptcy Judges endowment idea as well. He also suggested pitching the idea of renaming the Hagan fund the Hagan Bankruptcy Judges scholarship, which is another idea along with the first option.
Please let me know your input by Wednesday noon so the executive committee can discuss and make a decision.
Our goal is to raise $25,000, which is enough to be endowed at the U of I, with Judge Pappas retirement gig to be a kickoff for the fundraising drive.
