REDUCING HARMFUL ADVERSE CHILD EXPERIENCES (ACEs) IN IDAHO FAMILIES

Objective 3.3 By July 1, 2023, implement three evidence informed initiatives that reduce harmful adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in Idaho families.

Task 3.3.2 Implement a learning collaborative with medical providers to increase screening for ACEs to interrupt the intergenerational transmission of ACEs within families by Oct 1, 2021.

Throughout the pandemic, many of us have had to take a step back from the communities where we normally socialize. For some, spending much more time at home with our families has been one of the few positives over the past year. However, it also means many of Idaho's children have not had access to sources of support outside the family.

Undoubtedly, there are children in Idaho who will have experienced traumas over the past year that may impact them for life. Unfortunately, as we near the end of the public health crisis, we expect that we will also see signs of these traumas that have taken place through this ordeal.

The increased pressure on families has drawn more widespread attention to a problem that is not new: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). ACEs are traumatic events that are experienced in childhood that can have a lifetime of negative effects. These experiences, including abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, are linked with numerous negative health outcomes, such as binge drinking, smoking, and depression.

One of the ways we support Idahoans is to ensure those who suffer negative health outcomes have access to treatment and support. But we are also developing more upstream approaches to promoting healthy, independent Idahoans by increasing our focus on preventative strategies. DHW staff are pushing forward with groundbreaking work focusing on community support and reducing the number of ACEs in Idaho. If we can provide support to families to help them to be happy and healthy, and avoid childhood traumas from happening at all, evidence suggests we will have a far happier, healthier population of Idaho adults down the road. And in turn, they will be better able to raise happy, healthy families. It's exactly the type of chain reaction we want to see.

Alongside community partners, DHW staff are currently forming focus groups to prevent ACEs and better understand the causes and effects of ACEs. I want to thank the team members who are striving to create this human-centered approach to ACEs screening and organizing the focus groups, including staff members with the Idaho Children's Trust Fund: Roger Sherman, Taryn Yates, and Liz Paul. I would also like to thank the DHW staff members from the Maternal & Child Health Section, who contributed to project development and evaluated proposals, including Kristin McKie, Kelsey Hofacer, and Ivie Smart. Finally, Ashtin Glodt will monitor and support the project to ensure progress toward accomplishing this important work,
