Hi everyone!

We are working on an assessment of our Public Information jobs and I'm hoping you may be able to help us out. Our current job series consists of three staff levels and three director levels. Allocations for directors are generally based on size and scope of the agency and its communications program.  The Public Information job series was originally designed to focus on written communications, such as press releases, as well as public relations activities. With the rise in popularity of social media platforms and video communications, we have received a request to update the job series to include roles for video content creators. As we were evaluating these concepts, we are potentially looking at merging in other jobs such as graphic designers and photographers since we have found that these positions often work under a Public Information Director in support of communications activities.

Specific questions are as follows. If it's easier, you may choose to forward your applicable class specifications (or links to them) in lieu of answering the questions if the information is already provided in your specifications. Responses are requested by May 20th. If more time is needed, please let me know?


  1.  What title(s) do you use for public information jobs? In 2021 ,Nebraska consolidated several related classifications into a new series, which includes Marketing and Communications Specialist I, II, and III.



  1.  Do your public information jobs include roles for videographers, photographers, and graphic designers? Or, are these roles separate from your public information series? Yes, prior to consolidations in 2021, the roles now under the Marketing and Communications Specialist series included Artist Chief, Artist (I-II) Agriculture Promotion Coordinator, Communications Assistant, Marketing Manager, and Public Information Officer (I-III).



  1.  Do your public information jobs include roles for marketing specialists that focus on analyzing trends related to the target audience and who provide input into communications activities? Or, are these roles separate from your public information series? Yes, marketing and public information roles are now included in the same series.



  1.  Please share your specifications (or links) for public information jobs as well as for videographer, photographer, graphic designer, and/or marketing roles as applicable.

Thanks so much for your help! We've found this particular assessment to be a challenge since qualifications could vary depending on the role, but there tends to be few positions that work with communications activities at each state agency. Your response will greatly assist us in determining if we need to create separate jobs for the various roles or if they could be combined for greater efficiency in maintaining our classification system. We are thinking that having the various roles in one series may help with cross training between disciplines and allow for a more uniform career progression for communications-related functions.
